Once upon a time there was an adventurer who dreamed of becoming a hero... and following behind him was a girl from his village who wanted to make sure he came home safe. The adventurer became the head of a group of wandering heroes who looked to the girl as a kind of mascot of sorts. She tended to their armor, cooked food for them, and would do whatever she could to be useful. Though she was never as powerful or courageous or skilled as those in the company, she nonetheless did her best.
But deep within the girl a desire grew to help them. She saw her friends -- her family -- come to blows with nothing but a smile and a warm meal to help. The girl wanted to do more. She wanted the power to change things and to see them safe and well.
She would get the chance.
One night deep within the caverns of Undermountain, Dorzann the aboleth sensed the potential magic pooling within the girl and the hero who were traveling within his do his bidding. Before she knew what was happening the aboleth enthralled the girl, and she brought her friends into Dorzann's clutches. For over a year she served as "The Voice of Dorzann," acting as the aboleth's will into the deeper sections of the Dungeon of the Mad King, bringing some to become thralls and others as food. All for her family. All for Dorzann.
Yet a voice spoke out from deep within herself. A quiet voice of her inner desires: "No! This is wrong! I am hurting them! Make it stop!" Distant from her master or horrified by the most recent atrocity, the mental link that held the girl was shattered. She fled deeper into the dungeon: away from Dorzann, away from her friends who would bring her back to him.
For two years the girl hid herself away from eyes of man or beast. She was not spared the time of her enrapture and was all too aware of what Dorzann had her do. In penance she hid to the shadows, only surfacing to survive and to aid, changing her name to "Nil" in recognition to the value she has brought to humanity. Though now free, the aboleth's mental grasp did not leave her unharmed. She was altered, changed, and possessing psychic powers she had in the service of her master.
But before she consigned herself to an eternity on the sixth floor of the Mad Mage's Dungeon, a group of adventurers found her and informed her of her master's death. With hope in her heart once again, and she followed with them to discover what happened to her friends... and to see if she still has a place in a world she had been removed herself from for so long.
